This ambitious project holds 16 of the most earnest songs I had ever written. We recorded 23 songs, but at some point we realized that a CD only holds 70 some minutes of music. This being my big "debut" recording, I wanted it to be "important enough if it was my last". Still unclear who it was supposed to be "important" to. Haha. There are some remarkable moments in these tracks, some young passion that is truly beautiful, especially songs like track 2 (called "Grandma") which was entirely written and performed by my friend Ryan Peters. Everyone was a little bit unsure why I would want to feature it so predominantly at the beginning of the record. I just thought it was the coolest song I'd ever heard and Ryan didn't mind putting it on my record one little bit! Amazing. "July 25" was written for my wedding day in 1998. "Tammy" was written for a girl in youth group. "Asian Monsoon" was written in Fukuoka, Japan. "Whalesong" was written shortly after I had sex for the first time, exploring about 8 different guitar tunings and 5 different time signatures. "The Blessing of Todd" was a song I started singing spontaneously during a drunken sharing time while on tour through New Brunswick. "Hideaway" one of my favourite wedding sons, written for Nico and Ingrid. This record was funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and produced by Brian Wiebe.
